Kovar
Kovar is an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy with a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of
hard (borosilicate) glass. This makes it especially suitable for uses which require a matched-expansion
seal between metal and glass parts. Thus kovar finds wide usage in the electronics industry for metal
parts bonded to hard glass envelopes for such devices as power tubes, x-ray tubes, etc., and other
applications requiring glass-to-metal seals.
Heat Treatment
Because of its effect on the actual structure of the material, there is a distinction made between heat treating
the material to facilitate fabrication and heat treating the material to ensure optimum conditions for glass sealing,
plating or brazing.
Stress Relief Annealing
To relieve stress and work hardening of parts at intermediate stages of fabrication. It is intended particularly
for drawing, forming and spinning operations.
Wash and degrease parts.
Anneal in atmosphere controlled furnace. Atmosphere may be wet or dry hydrogen, dissociated ammonia,
cracked gas or similar neutral atmosphere.
Annealing temperature is not critical; however, high temperatures (greater than 900 oC) or extended time
periods (longer than 60 minutes) should be avoided because such treatments promote grain growth.
Typical cycle: 850 oC for 30 minutes.
Parts should be held at temperature for the indicated time and then furnace cooled to less than 175 oC to
avoid oxidation and/or thermal shock (which may cause distortion).
Heat Treatment for Oxidation
Make sure that proper methods are used to clean, degrease and bright dip parts.
Oxidation - Heat treat in an electric air furnace to 850 oC to 900 oC until parts are cherry red (dull red heat).
The length of heat cycle is approximately 3 minutes, but due to differences in humidity and furnaces, the proper
cycle has to be varied. Then reduce heat approximately 10 oC per minute. When parts are cooled, oxide will be
formed. The oxide may appear from light grey to black in color. Black is normally considered to be over oxidation
and is not necessarily desirable for a good glass to metal seal.
Permalloy 80
Permalloy 80 is a highly magnetic nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy, with roughly 80% nickel and 15% iron
and 5% molybdenum content. It's useful as a magnetic core material in electrical and electronic equipment.
Commercial permalloy alloys typically have relative permeability of around 100,000, compared to several
thousand for ordinary steel. It provides maximum magnetic permeabilities and minimal core losses at
low field strengths. This vacuum-melted product also offers the advantages of small size and weight in
magnetic core and shielding materials for the applications shown below. Other magnetic properties are
near zero magnetostriction, and significant anisotropic magnetoresistance.
Permalloy 80 provides high initial and maximum permeabilities with low coercive force, low hysteresis loss,
low eddy-current losses, and low magnetostriction, which is critical for industrial applications, allowing it to be
used in thin films where variable stresses would otherwise cause a large destructive variation in magnetic properties.

The maximum magnetic properties of Permalloy 80 are best achieved by annealing for 4 hours at 1120oC to 1160oC
in a pure dry hydrogen atmosphere (-40oC dew point). Cooling in the 700oC to 300oC range at 3oC to 7oC per minute
is recommended. In order to retain the maximum properties this anneal should be done after all manufacturing of the
part is completed.
MuMETAL ® magnetic shielding alloy (mu metal grade ASTM A753 Alloy 4, UNS N14080, 80NiFe) is our most widely
known brand. Mu-Metal is a unoriented nickel-iron soft ferromagnetic alloy with very high permeability suitable for
sensitive electronic equipment shielding. It is used primarily in low intensity magnetizing fields (DC-100kHz) where
high attenuation is desired (high permeability & high shielding efficiency). Mu-metal ® offers exceptionally high initial
and maximum permeability with minimum hysteresis loss. It also has very low coercive force (Hc), very low core losses
and a low remanence (Br).
Available as stress annealed (soft annealed for ease of fabrication), or final annealed for maximum permeability.
Mu METAL® is used for fabricated shields such as enclosures, cylinders, cans, channels or 3D boxes. Final annealing
(Perfection Annealing) in a dry hydrogen atmosphere is required as a last processing step after all forming operations
(i.e. stamping, machining, bending, rolling or welding). The final annealing treatment is paramount to the magnetic
properties of Mumetal. The permeability of the cold rolled state increases by more than three orders of magnitude
after final annealing.
